Wellington Street now open as final touches are made to regeneration project

Wellington Street has been transformed into a welcoming thoroughfare to the town centre.

The project is one of the Council’s key town centre regeneration Pledges and its primary aim is to create a more accessible route from the railway station into the heart of Swindon.

Wellington Street, which connects the railway station to the Tri Centre on Manchester Road and Milford Street, has been resurfaced and separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists have been created.

A new zebra crossing has been installed as well as a new toucan crossing on Milford Street. New paving has also been laid on the footpaths and sharper markings have been drawn on the roads.

Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “I am pleased to declare Wellington Street officially open following the regeneration work that has taken place.

“The area around the railway station now feels much more welcoming and the transformation should make people feel extremely proud of their town.

“I would like to thank commuters for bearing with us while the work has gone ahead. Improvements like this will contribute towards Swindon being recognised as a desirable place in which to live, work, invest and do business.”

Although the road is currently open, contractors will be on site for another week finishing off small remedial works.

The £851,000 scheme has being funded by a grant received by the Council from the National Productivity Investment Fund. This is being supplemented by S106 developer contributions that have been received from various town centre developments, and Local Transport Plan funding.
