The Council has been working with a number of site partners to reinstate the opening hours of the Bristol Street Tunnel after it was shut earlier this month by PWC, who were appointed as administrators when previous tunnel operators Carillion and Churchward PLC went into administration.

After initially getting the tunnel back open seven days a week between 7am and 5pm, the Council has negotiated with site partners to provide security so the Tunnel can return to its previous opening hours, including until 9pm Monday to Friday.

Councillor Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, said: “I must thank Council officers and our partners for their hard work in getting this important walkway back open for shoppers, workers and the residents who live in the Old Railway Quarter.

“This has not been an easy process due to the historical management agreements that were put in place in the mid-90s in the days of Railtrack. But we have managed to find a way forward just in time for the busy Christmas period which is great news for everyone who uses the Tunnel.”
