Fleming Way Bus Boulevard scheme
When will the Bus Boulevard scheme begin?
We will start constructing the temporary bus station in Autumn 2021, in preparation for the work along the main stretch of Fleming Way.
Phase one of the Fleming Way Bus Boulevard construction will start at the western end of the scheme in Cheltenham Street car park.
Once BT have completed their cable diversions, we will start phase two of the work on the main stretch of Fleming Way, between the Whalebridge junction and Milford Street. This will involve a full closure of the road. We anticipate this starting in summer 2022.
Pedestrians will still be able to get to and from the town centre during the works. We will provide clear signs to show the routes around the construction site, and also to the temporary bus station. Pedestrians will also be able to access the train and bus stations. Similarly, access to Fleet Street for drivers and pedestrians will be maintained during the Fleming Way road closure via Milford Street.
It is anticipated that the full construction period of the scheme will be approximately two and a half years.
Alternative driving routes
Fleming Way Bus Boulevard, when it is completed, will be open to all buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians, but it will no longer be a route for private vehicles and through traffic.
We are working on alternative routes for drivers in the town centre during the construction period, and for when the final scheme on Fleming Way (between the Whalebridge junction and Milford Street only) is no longer open to private vehicles.
Some routes have already been identified and work is being carried out to ensure these are not going to cause unacceptable levels of congestion. Further details and updates will be available via the Highways News e-newsletter.
