Fleming Way Bus Boulevard scheme

When will the Bus Boulevard scheme begin?

We are on track to begin Phase One of the Fleming Way Bus Boulevard construction in the spring of 2022. We will be starting at the western end of the scheme in Cheltenham Street car park to avoid the ongoing work with Openreach, which is diverting its cables in the main section of Fleming Way.

The intention is to start Phase Two of the work on Fleming Way, between the Whalebridge junction and Milford Street, in the autumn of 2022. This will involve a full closure of Fleming Way to all traffic.

The buses will be partially relocated into the existing bus station and also to other upgraded bus stops around the town. More details about this will follow in the New Year (early 2022).

Pedestrians will still be able to get to and from the town centre during the works. We will provide clear signs to show the routes around the construction site, and we will leave the subway in place and open for as long as we can, doing all other works around it before finally removing it.

Pedestrians will also be able to access the train and bus stations. Similarly, access to Fleet Street for drivers and pedestrians will be maintained via Milford Street.

It is anticipated that the full construction period of the scheme will be approximately two and a half years, completing in the autumn of 2024.

Alternative driving routes

Fleming Way Bus Boulevard, when it is completed, will be open to buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians, but it will no longer be a route for private vehicles and through traffic.

We are developing alternative routes for drivers in the town centre during the construction period, and for when the Bus Boulevard is no longer open to private vehicles.

More details will be available about these diversion routes early in 2022.

Further details and updates will be available via the Highways News e-newsletter.
