Independent travel training

What is independent travel training (ITT)?

Independent Travel Training is a one on one training opportunity for children or young people to learn how to undertake their home to school journey on their own.

Why travel train?

Swindon Borough Council is committed to ensuring the best outcomes for our SEN children, which includes the preparation for adulthood, and with this in mind Independent Travel Training is a key part of promoting a child or young person’s independence.

Who can be travel trained?

Any child or young person with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is eligible for Travel Training.

How does it work?

Swindon Borough Council employs a Travel Trainer who works with the schools in order to be able to carry out the training to their young people. A child who has been assessed as being ready by the school will have had discussions with both the parents and the child before the training takes place. The travel trainer/school will then provide a risk assessment and route plan which has been designed specifically for the journey to and from school. Once all are in agreement with the route then a travel trainer will spend as long as it takes to ensure that the child is able to make the journey safely.
