Personal travel budget

A Personal Travel Budget (PTB) is a sum of money paid each month to allow parents to make their own travel choice for their child with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

As a general rule your child will be eligible if they meet distance criteria as per the home to school transport policy. Distance is calculated as the shortest walking distance from the home address to school.

Exceptions will be made for those under the distance criteria who can prove that their disability, or Special Education Needs prevent them from walking to school (accompanied by an adult). This will be looked at on a case by case basis.

What can I use the money for?

You can use the money however you wish as long as your child's punctuality and/or attendance is not affected and they are taken to school safely. The school will monitor punctuality and attendance, and will report this back to the SEND Service. Any issues will be investigated by the EHCP Coordinator.

If punctuality and/or attendance are found to be an issue, the PTB will be stopped and alternative transport arrangements made.

Examples of how the PTB can be used (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • To pay a childminder to look after siblings
  • To purchase a travel pass for a parent to get the bus to accompany their child/children
  • Arranging shared travel arrangements with other families
  • Finance for a vehicle
  • Fuel for a vehicle

What would I be paid?

The Personal Travel Budget (PTB) has been set at 55p per mile. The Travel Advisor will calculate the route and the costs for each individual who is entitled to transport.

The calculation is based on the shortest driving distance from your address to the school. The distance is then multiplied by four trips, this allows for the journey to be made in both the morning and afternoon. The daily amount is then multiplied by 190 which is the number of days in an academic year. This is then divided by eleven to give a monthly figure.

The PTB is not paid during the holidays in August as no home to school trips will be taking place.
