We employ people with a diverse skills and experience in a wide range of services … local infrastructure planning, libraries, social work, parks and gardens, roads maintenance and communications to name but a few. As such, we can offer you a wide range of work placement opportunities that will help you to get key skills and experience that employers look for. You will be able to witness and experience first hand, what it’s like to work in a modern public service business environment.
Work experience placements are generally for a period of one week and are subject to availability. Although we will always try to accommodate your wishes it may not always be possible to do so, particularly where the demand is high for certain roles.
How it works
The hours you will work are agreed in advance, between you, the Council and those involved in arranging the placement. Unless there are exceptional reasons, under 16s will not be asked to work more than our standard working day (7 hours and 24 minutes). You will be advised about appropriate clothing to wear at the interview stage.
You will not be paid for your placement and you will be expected to provide your own lunch as the facilities available for this will depend on where you are located for your placement.
Throughout your placement you are covered by our Employer’s Liability Insurance and Public Liability Insurance.
How to apply
Alternatively, please complete the downloadable Work Placement Register of Interest Form (PDF)
Once you have applied, we will try to find a suitable work placement for you. If you are successful you will be contacted directly by the department you’ll be working in or by a member of our Learning and Development team. Generally we’ll contact you within 10 working-days.
In most cases, you will be asked to attend an informal interview. The purpose of this is to give you the opportunity to see the environment you’ll be working in and to find out more about the placement before you start. It also helps your supervisor or manager to prepare a suitable programme for you.
