M4 Junction 16 improvement works

Latest news and updates on the project

The team at Junction 16 continue to make good progress as they draw close to the final stages of the project, with the last remaining areas of surfacing being carried out.  Siemens continue to install the new traffic lights, and get these ready for transfer from the current temporary traffic light set up.  The team continue to install signs and the last few lamp columns, as well as removing old or redundant lamp columns and signage.

The planned night time closures are almost complete, although there may be some overnight lane restrictions in place to enable some minor works to go ahead.  There are no further planned full closures for Junction 16 over the next two weeks, however Hay Lane Southbound (towards Wroughton) will be closed for a short period overnight on Thursday 26th April  between 8am until 6pm. You may have noticed the traffic management on site throughout the day has decreased as areas of the junction are finished.  The next focus will be on opening the new right hand turn from Royal Wootton Bassett into Hay Lane, and to get the new traffic light loops connected.

Junction 16 improvement works plans

Swindon Borough Council is undertaking major works to remodel Junction 16 of the M4. This scheme is part of our plan to improve roads across the network and further enhance the growth and economy of Swindon and Wiltshire.

The scheme will be funded by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Wichelstowe Joint Venture. It is being delivered by Swindon Borough Council in partnership with Highways England and Wiltshire Council.

Works are now underway and will ensure the major highway interchange can cope with forecast future traffic levels and cater for future development in the surrounding areas.

Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd is carrying out the work, which is expected to be complete by Spring 2018.

The junction will be open to traffic at all times, with the exception of the occasional overnight closure, but there is likely to be some disruption to motorists.
