Summer Challenge 2017

Animal Agents

Have you heard about the strange goings on at your local library this summer?

The Reading Agency and libraries are delighted to present the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge, Animal Agents - a whole host of clever creatures, ready to solve all kinds of crimes! This band of furry, slippery and feathered friends is specially trained to use their skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries – with a huge helping of fun along the way.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at your local library, then read at least six library books of your choice to collect special stickers and other incentives along the way – all for FREE. There’s a website to add to the fun too!

Children's reading can 'dip' during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. This can be a problem for schools to put right in the new term, and The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge really helps by getting three quarters of a million children into libraries over the summer.

There is no other free reading activity that involves so many children, introduces families to their library, encourages children to choose books freely and independently and is endorsed by parents, teachers and the Department for Education.

Library staff and volunteers will be on hand to help children win medals for reading, and an interactive ‘Animal Agents’ website will link children with top authors and illustrators whilst giving them room to talk about their favourite books and share reading ideas.

Last year, in Swindon, a record 3589 children read 13,375 books throughout the summer. We will be updating progress regularly via the @SwindonLibrary Twitter feed. Check our blog for associated events and activities on the libraries website.

There will be also be a fantastic design a doughnut competition devised by award winning author and illustrator Steve Antony, who is donating signed copies of his books to the lucky winners. There will also be the chance to win vouchers for a range of activities, kindly donated by local businesses.

Animal Agents runs from Saturday 15th July until Saturday 2nd September.

Any queries can be sent to: or ask at your local library.

The Reading Agency is an independent charity with a mission to give everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers. It is funded by the Arts Council, and has a formal partnership with public library services.
