Change to election cycle consultation
Have your say on how often we hold elections for Swindon Borough Council.
We are running a public consultation on a potential change to our election cycle.
These arrangements are fundamental to local democracy, so it's essential that we consult local people about their preferences. We are writing to every household in the borough to explain how you can have your say.
At a Swindon Borough Council meeting earlier this year, councillors agreed to hold a consultation on potentially changing the election cycle. You can find minutes of that meeting here:
Borough Council elections in Swindon are currently undertaken 'by thirds'. This means that all councillors are elected for a term of four years, with one third being elected for three consecutive years followed by a fourth year when there are no elections.
We are consulting on whether we should retain the current election cycle, or change to a 'whole council' elections model, also known as ‘all out elections’. Under this system, all seats on the council would be elected at the same time, once every four years.
How the consultation works
A postal consultation will run from Monday,16 September 2019 to Friday, 25 October 2019. During this time you will receive a clearly marked envelope containing:
- an explanatory leaflet that provides some background on SBC’s current election cycle and an alternative system (this will be the same as the information on this website.)
- a consultation form to complete and return in the pre-paid envelope provided, to arrive by no later than Friday, 25 October 2019.
You will be asked to indicate whether we should retain the current election cycle or if we should change to a whole council elections model. We would like to hear from everybody in the household who is 18 years old or over. Please only complete for the number of occupants who are 18 or over living in the household. If there are more than four eligible adults in the household please contact 020 8889 9203 for further consultation forms.
Councillors will consider all the feedback received during the public consultation at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Thursday, 21 November 2019.
If you can't take part in the postal consultation, or require the information in an alternative format, please contact us:
- Telephone: 01793 445500
- Email: email@example.com
If you do not receive the postal consultation form please call 020 8889 9203 to request another delivery.
If you have any further comments after responding, you can complete a feedback survey about the change to election cycle consultation. This will be open for resident feedback from Monday, 16 September, once the consultation forms have been issued.
