Meet the Waste Wardens!

The Waste WardensA team of waste wardens will be on hand to provide practical advice on all aspects of waste and recycling. They will be able to call at your home and talk through any problems or issues you may have.

They will also be available to provide talks to community groups. To arrange a talk for your local group or organisation, please contact the waste warden team on 01793 445501.

We appreciate that the switch to wheelie bins is a change and we want to help as much as we can. The majority of residents will manage with no problem, but help will be on hand for those that are struggling.

Frequently asked questions

I have a large family - can I have more than one bin?
Everyone should be able to manage with one 240 litre bin. If you are unable to cope, a waste warden will visit to carry out a waste audit. You will not automatically get a second bin - only if it is absolutely necessary.

Will I be given a choice of bin size?
Yes. A 240 litre bin will provided to all residents as standard. This will hold 4/5 black sacks of rubbish. If you feel you could cope with a smaller 120 litre bin (holds 2 1/2 black sacks), one will be provided instead.

Request a smaller bin postcardA postcard will be delivered with your recycling box giving you the option to opt for the 120 litre smaller bin. They are ideal for couples or persons living on their own. Simply complete and return the FREEPOST postcard and a bin will be delivered.

Will the bins be fitted with microchips for each household's rubbish to be weighed?
No
. We will not be weighing waste from individual bins.

What do I do if my bin is stolen?
Stolen bins will be replaced free of charge, but you need to report the theft to the police and obtain a crime reference number before reporting the bin stolen to us.

Will my bin smell and attract rats after two weeks?
No
. Wheelie bins provide a much more hygienic way of containing waste than loose plastic sacks. As long as waste is bagged, securely tied and the bin lid kept shut you will have no problems. We advise that food & pet waste is wrapped in newspaper and double bagged before being put into the bin.

What about maggots and flies?
If the bin lid is kept closed, flies will not be able to reach the waste and will not be able to lay eggs on it. Provided these basic housekeeping rules are followed, there is no difference between a weekly and fortnightly collection.

What if my bin gets dirty on the inside?
Un-bagged waste put directly into the wheelie bin could cause smells over time. The bins can be easily rinsed out with household detergent whenever they get dirty.
