North Wessex Downs

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

View of Marlborough, WiltshireThe North Wessex Downs is a nationally important landscape encompassing well known areas such as the Marlborough and Watership Downs, Lambourn Valley and the Vale of Pewsey, the World Heritage Site at Avebury and the White Horse of Uffington. The market towns of Marlborough and Hungerford can be found within its boundaries, as can large stretches of the Ridgeway National Trail and the Kennet and Avon Canal.

The area is without doubt one of the jewels in England's crown and lives up to it's promise as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB).

View of North Wessex Downs countrysideDuring 2001 a Council of Partners was formed to bring together key partners with interests in the area. The Council is a partnership of government agencies, local authorities, community, conservation, farming, landowning, business & voluntary organisations. All have signed a Charter setting out the terms by which the partners will work together for the long term benefit of the AONB and all who live and work in it.

The Council of Partners has developed a website that provides a wealth of information about the North Wessex Downs area. You can visit the website at www.northwessexdowns.org.uk.
