Swindon Curiosities: The Art of Collecting

This exhibition dips into the museum's diverse geology, archaeology and social history collections and goes behind the scenes to explore the history of collecting. Find out more about the kinds of objects collected over the years, and the work of curators past and present.

Some of the displays are changed during the year to showcase different objects and illustrate work on a major ongoing collections audit at the museum.

Exploring the dynamic relationship between artists ideas and the ways they structure their work. This exhibition tracks changes in emphasis across the last 100 years through works by artists such as David Bomberg, Richard Hamilton and Lisa Milroy, from the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art.

Collections Audit

Are you interested in Swindon's history? Do you have basic computer skills? If so, Swindon Museum & Art Gallery could be the place for you. The social history collection offers a fascinating snapshot of daily life in Swindon over the last hundred years or so. We are currently running a major project, with the help of volunteers, to check every object,  update museum records and transfer information to a computer database.

The database will become an extremely useful tool, not only for curators to monitor the collection and find individual items, but a great asset for researchers, schoolchildren and everyone who is interested in our collections and Swindons history from prehistoric times to the present day.

If you would like to know more about volunteering opportunities at the museum & art gallery please tel. 01793 466556.
