Swindon enjoys a long-established friendship with its twin towns. The first such relationship was with Saltzgitter in Germany and later with Ocotal in the Central American country of Nicaragua.
In 2003, Swindon Borough Council moved a stage forward again when it entered into a new friendship and co-operation agreement with the city of Torun in Poland.
