Learning and Leisure Opportunities

Learning and Leisure Opportunities

As part of work being carried out by Swindon Social Services, in connection with the Government’s ‘Valuing People’ white paper and recommendations, the Day Services Group considering the need to modernise day services, asked for information to be collected about places people with learning disabilities can go for social, leisure and learning opportunities in the Swindon and the surrounding area. It was intended that this would include services that are not specifically for people with learning disabilities, but could be accessible, not just in a physical sense, but also ensured people felt welcome to go to them.

A sample a small proportion of providers’ facilities have been checked to find out if the information they have supplied is accurate. It would be good to receive feedback as new information comes to light.

In addition to this guide, Swindon Borough Council have produced a useful booklet called ‘Swindon’s Access Guide to...’ which covers all Local Authority managed facilities in greater depth than this guide.
For a copy either visit the Central Library or telephone 01793 463725.

Also the Reference Library (01793 463240) have an ‘Access’ database with information on clubs, groups and local organisations.

The Disability Information Service, DIS, (01793 537588) manage a database of disability related information and The Information Centre (01793  530328) offer a wide range of information about almost everything that happens and is happening in and around Swindon.

Swindon Card offers discounted use of facilities and activities at Swindon Borough Council sites. This includes sports and leisure, country parks, art and dance sessions.
Further information about the Swindon Card can be found using SwindonCard
