Can I have some help?

Direct Payments

If I decide to have a Direct Payment – can I have some help?

The RHC Trust is an organisation Swindon Borough Council works with to make sure you have all the help and information you need to make choices and also to support you if you wish to employ someone yourself. The Care Manager dealing with your Direct Payment will offer to refer you to the RHC Trust if you decide you want to consider having a Direct Payment.

YES There is assistance available from the RHC Trust to help you decide how to meet your needs flexibly using a Direct Payment and to help you with the practicalities, whether you decide to use a care agency, want to employ your own Personal Assistant or want to have a combination of both.

You do not have to be supported by the RHC Trust but their assistance is free to you and their advice can help to prevent problems arising later. If you are going to employ a carer yourself you would be well advised to accept the assistance of the RHC Trust as they have a lot of experience in employment law.  They are able to assist you to recruit Personal Assistants safely, assist with personal liability insurance (which must be in place before a Personal Assistant commences employment) and payroll services – to name but a few.

If I decide to employ my own Personal Assistant, can I check them out?

YES.Once you have interviewed and decided on an employee, the Council can arrange a Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB). This will be paid for by the Council. You do not have to have a CRB check for your employees but it is in your interests to do so. If you have any children in your family home the Council would strongly urge you to request a CRB check of any of your employees who are engaged via a Direct Payment. This is to protect your children and to give you more peace of mind.
