Street Naming and Numbering

Street Naming and Numbering

Street Naming and Numbering

The address of a property is increasingly becoming a very important issue. More organisations, postal, emergency services, and statutory undertakers as well as the general public need an efficient means of locating and referencing properties. The Council is the Street Naming and Numbering Authority for the borough and as such must be notified of all new properties constructed or modified as well as changes to existing addresses within the Swindon Borough area.

Street naming will be carried out in consultation with Parish Councils where applicable, who will be sent a list of proposed names for the development.  Every effort will be made to avoid duplication within the locality and to avoid names which are frivolous or obscene. The council may name streets after recently deceased individuals provided permission is granted from living relatives. The council does not name streets after living individuals. Only surnames or family names will be used for street naming purposes. Names based on commercial interest will not be included.

Postcodes

Post code enquiries except in the case of newly built or divided properties should be addressed to Royal Mail on 08456 045060. Further information can be found on the Royal Mail website (www.royalmail.co.uk)
