Car Parking - General Information
Swindon has 24 main car parks with an additional six in Old Town. There is also a Park & Ride facility on the outskirts of town on the Cricklade Road in the north of Swindon. The Park & Ride scheme opened at the Copse in November 1998 and over the next five years a further six are planned around the outskirts of Swindon. The use of these Park & Ride facilities is hoped to ease the volume of traffic in the town centre and cut down on harmful exhaust emissions. Further details of the Park & Ride scheme are given below.
There are a total of 5,370 car park spaces available within the town centre and a further 438 in Old Town. Ten of the 24 designated town car parks are long stay offering cheaper all day parking to both office/shop staff and shoppers. Three of the towns most popular car parks are pay-on-foot multi-storey, barrier controlled with CCTV coverage. Further CCTV monitoring is being planned for other car parks.
During the past few years Swindon town centre has undergone a major transformation.
At the heart of this rejuvenation programme the council has updated the town's car park environment by:
- Installing better lighting and signage
- Improving security
- Introducing user-friendly payment systems
The Brunel West and North car parks have received the prestigious 'Secured Car Parks Award' for safety and security, given by the police and administered by the British Parking Association on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). For further information, please visit the British Parking Association website (www.britishparking.co.uk).
