There are approximately 300 bridges managed by Swindon Borough Council. The rest are either motorway bridges, boundary bridges or privately owned. Our aim is to manage and maintain the borough council's highway bridges and structures assets in a cost-effective, sustainable and safe manner.
We inspect and maintain a range of bridges as simple as stone slab or clapper bridges to state-of-the-art cable stays such the one pictured here, which was adopted into council ownership in 2002.
In addition to the bridge stock, the council looks after highway retaining walls.
Ownership is sometimes unclear and each structure has to be checked individually, but if you see anything you think is unsafe report it to us and we will try to help.
Although we name and number our bridges and structures, if you are reporting a fault they are best identified by the name of the road they are located on and the obstruction they cross.
If you have any problems or questions relating to bridges please telephone Alan Frost on 01793 466707 or e-mail him at: afrost@swindon.gov.uk.
