We take our feet for granted and it is only when we experience some discomfort that we look for the help of a Chiropodist.
The most common problem is probably not being able to manage your own feet due to age, disability or poor eyesight.
As you get older, just cutting the toenails becomes more difficult. The nails often thicken causing pain. Even if the nails are simply too long, they are uncomfortable in your shoes.
This is the key to comfortable feet. Persistent foot problems can lead to knee, hip and back pain. This is worth considering before rushing off to the Chiropractor or Osteopath.
Shoes that are too narrow, too short or sloppy fitting will all cause problems. You only have to walk a short distance in badly fitting shoes to acquire blisters and corns. Take plenty of time when choosing shoes. Always try on both left and right shoes and walk up and down in them several times before handing over your money. This may seem obvious but many people don't bother and make a rushed decision which they later regret.
If you do develop corns or painful hard skin areas, it is best to have them treated by a Chiropodist. Home treatments often contain an acid which can damage the skin if not properly used.
Fungal conditions of the skin and toenails are very common as the feet are enclosed in shoes and socks which provide an ideal breeding ground for these organisms. Good personal hygiene, ensuring the feet are dried properly (especially between the toes), will help to keep problems at bay. Various topical treatments can be purchased. The skin condition athletes foot is quite easily treated. Fungal nail conditions are more difficult. In some cases your G.P. may prescribe oral medication.
People who are at risk from diabetes or poor circulation need to be especially aware of their feet. If you have diabetes, you should ensure that you attend regular check ups with your G.P. or at the diabetic clinic.
Any painful conditions should be treated urgently but diabetics should read product labels very carefully and not use any treatments containing acids.
These can be very painful but they can be treated by a Chiropodist. However, if there is an infection and swelling around the toe, you will probably need to see your G.P. for a course of antibiotics before the nail can be treated.
These are caused by a virus entering the skin and are often picked up from communal areas e.g. swimming pools or showers. They can appear anywhere on the foot.
If they are not hurting, it's OK to leave them untreated as your own immune system is capable of getting rid of them eventually.
If they are painful and you are concerned about them, there are several 'over the counter' treatments. These products do not bring instantaneous results and you need to persevere with the treatment to get a result. The most effective treatment is cryosurgery (freezing). Unfortunately cryosurgery is not available at the Health Hydro. You will need to find a Chiropodist who has the necessary equipment.
Some G.P.'s have their own verruca treatment sessions and it is worth contacting them as the treatment is free of charge.
Chiropody is available at the Health Hydro:
