A draft Inclusive Design Access for All Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) has been prepared to support Principle 8 of the Design and Sustainability Policy (DMP1) as detailed within the Swindon Borough Core Strategy.
The purpose of this draft SPD is to achieve high quality and inclusive design for all development, including individual buildings, public and private spaces and wider area development schemes to create an environment in Swindon in which all people have equal, easy and dignified access to Swindon's buildings, places and spaces. Access considerations within the draft SPD include Lifetime Neighbourhoods, Lifetime Homes, Wheelchair Accessible Housing, Street Design, Shared Surfaces and Access for All Design Principles.
A consultation period on the draft Inclusive Design Access for All SPD commences on Monday 18th January 2010 for a six-week period, ending on Monday 1st March 2010. Comments or representations on the SPD should be submitted to the Council's Planning team within the above time period.
The draft SPD together with the Comments Form can be downloaded below. An on-line comments form can also be used. The draft document and its accompanying Sustainability Appraisal (SA) can also be viewed at Swindon Borough Council Customer Services at Premier House, Station Road or Wat Tyler House, Beckhampton Street (Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 4.30 pm) from Monday 18th January 2010). The document may also be viewed at all libraries within Swindon Borough, during normal opening hours of those libraries.

The Design Guide covers all aspects of design focusing on specific types of development and specific areas. Its purpose is to ensure that the quality of design in the Borough is raised to reflect our Corporate aim of making Swindon an enjoyable place to live, work and play. It does this by providing clear criteria for assessing planning applications.

The Shopfronts Coding Guidance Note will be applied whenever planning consent is required for a new or amended shopfront. It provides detailed criteria against which proposals for shopfronts will be assessed, with the objective of improving the quality of shopfront design in the borough.
