Swindon Leaders for the Future: Swindon Local Authority Leadership Development Strategy

The recruitment and retention of the next generation of school leaders is one of the biggest challenges facing schools nationally and in Swindon.

Taking into account the age of the teaching profession and the projected retirement rate of head teachers over the next few years, we are likely to need an additional 15 to 20 percent of head teachers by 2009.

What are we doing to meet this challenge in Swindon?

A working party of head teachers, middle leaders and local authority officers and advisers has produced a Swindon Leadership Development Strategy. The aims of the strategy are to provide a systematic approach to succession planning and to create and attract a pool of quality school leaders. The strategy is supported by a Leaders of Learning map. This map is aimed to support the performance management process and identify leadership development opportunities and training.
