Useful websites for employers of migrant workers

At the Employing Migrant Workers Conference – April 2008, many speakers and exhibitors highlighted websites that are useful for companies that employ migrant workers. We’ve collected them together as a handy reference tool.

New rules for people working and studying in the UK. (www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk) Advice from the Borders & Immigration Agency.

To find if someone needs a visa (www.ukvisas.gov.uk) and how to apply for it

Understanding  British Health and Safety Law (www.hse.gov.uk/migrantworkers/index.htm) for migrant workers and their employers

The Gangmaster Licensing Agency (www.gla.gov.uk) is a government agency set up to protect workers from exploitation in agriculture, horticulture, shellfish gathering and food processing and packaging.

Employers responsibilities for fire safety (www.fire.gov.uk) under the new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) for advice on a wide range of employment, rights and financial issues that migrant workers might face

Europa - a Europe- wide service  (www.eures.europa.eu) that can help employers to recruit workers from other countries in the EU. Particularly useful where the local recruitment market is failing to meet employers needs for staff.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/forbusinessesandorganisation/pages/default.aspx) provides practical information on the promotion of equality and human rights to help companies meet their duties and promote fairness and dignity.
