From November 17th (after a break of six months) Swing, Jazz, Lindy, Ceroc and Jive dance returns to the Lava Lounge every Monday night.
The house band the Jazz Devils will be playing a selection of jazz standards, swing, jump jive and rock & roll specifically designed for dancing. It's the only venue in Swindon to offer a weekly dance night with a live band. Times 8:30 - 11:00 and admission on the door is £2.
If singers or instrumentalists would like to "sit in" with the resident band they can "book a slot" through the website. Every month to six weeks there will be a special guest band - see website for details. On these evenings the Jazz devils will still play specifically for dancing in between the guest band's sets.

It is early days at 'The Post Modern' but they are hoping to have a successful event towards Christmas based on the increasingly popular idea of 'The Affordable Art Fair'.
In 'artsite' terms this means up to 25 artists showing work, all of which will be priced at £100 or under- the idea being that they can produce a lively spot where people can pick up an original contemporary work of art, be it a painting, print, ceramic, drawing, sculpture etc., for a truly affordable price.
If you think your work would do well in such a venture, or you think you would like to produce affordable work specifically for this event, please see details below.
To book a space please contact:
Tim Carroll Tel: (01793) 527149 Email: timfcarroll@btinternet.com

The new Creative Advisor's Scheme is a flexible bespoke mentoring scheme for artists, curators, producers and arts managers/administrators from diverse backgrounds living in the region.
Research has shown that artists from diverse backgrounds don't have the same access to training and mentoring as other artists. The Creative Advisor's Scheme seeks to address this, and follows on from an extremely successful programme run by ACE, SW for black and minority ethnic artists.
The new scheme is open to anyone who has found it hard to access professional support and training including Deaf and disabled artists, people from Black and minority ethnic communities – particularly women, Eastern European migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
An eflyer for the scheme can be found by following the link below, giving full details of the benefits of taking part, and how to get in contact with ArtsMatrix who are managing the scheme. It would be very helpful if you could find the time to forward this to anyone within your organisation, suitable networks and individuals who you think would benefit from the scheme to ensure it is as widely publicised as possible.

Biz Meet is a new Swindon based business networking group. Events are aimed at those who work from home and those who are new to business. However, everyone is welcome.
The group has been started by Mary Parsons and Arjun Thandi, following their own experience of setting up businesses whilst working from home.
They started the group to create an ethos of sharing, socialising and supporting amongst small businesses and the individuals that run them.
Through the events and the website, they hope to create opportunities for entrepreneurs to meet like-minded individuals in a relaxed and informal environment.
To add value to the group, this website has been developed to enable easy communication amongst local small businesses.
Monthly Biz Meet meetings are mainly an open time for meeting others for a chat and a coffee. We hope to organise other events in a variety of other formats. We welcome any members who would like to organise their own events; please contact to discuss: info@bizmeet.co.uk.
You can also use the forum to post events organised by other networking groups in Swindon, to keep our members in touch.
Biz Meet is to be a group that makes working in small business a more sociable option, so if you have any ideas on how we could do this, please let us know.
More details can be found at www.bizmeet.co.uk

On Tuesday October 28th the HBG held its inaugural meeting at Wrag Barn Golf Club. Despite the wintry weather over 50 local businesses attended in response to an invitation from the steering Committee.
MEMBER BENEFITS:
Some benefits are tangible, others less so but the feeling of putting something back into the community is what has driven the group thus far and the committee hope to encourage and enthuse our membership to feel the same.
We will hold a monthly social event. Some of the ideas we've talked about include Wine Tasting, a Brewery visit, plus a visit to Steve and Julia Walton's textile printing studio for members to see what they do and to design and print a HBG T-shirt. In November there will be a visit to the TS Tech plant.
Member profiles will be featured in the Highworth Link magazine. Plans are afoot to develop a business section. The first business profile has just been published featuring Malcolm Corcoran from TS Tech.
A dedicated HBG website with links to member's own websites. The website is currently under construction and we have agreed for Ray Stephens, Sema4net and Lee Hiom, Lee Hiom Design to look at design options and webhosting facilities. Visit www.highworthbusinessgroup.co.uk to view our holding page and the Swindon TV clip for the group's launch event. On the site we plan to list all Members; a HBG events gallery; Member offers; a social diary and, as a further means of fund-raising, we will offer the opportunity to sponsor banners. If you want more than just a directory listing, please e-mail info@highworthbusinessgroup.co.uk for details.

The Wellcome Trust is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, performance arts, drama, visual arts, music, film, photography, craft, creative writing or digital media.
Applications are invited for projects up to £30,000.
The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the cultural, social and ethical issues around contemporary science.
The scheme is open to a wide range of people including artists, scientists, curators, filmmakers, writers, producers, academics, science communicators, directors, teachers, education officers and arts workers
Examples of projects involving schools that were selected last year are:
“Life Drawing!”; Warwickshire County Council worked with three local secondary schools to explore the role of drawing in helping young people to understand the concept of biomedical science.

For small to medium-sized projects (up to and including £30 000) the next application deadline is the 9th January 2009.
