Artsmark, managed by Arts Council England, recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts. Open to all primary, secondary and special schools (maintained and independent), Artsmark provides a benchmark for arts provision that encourages schools to consider and develop opportunities in arts, drama, dance and music.

Every school awarded an Artsmark has completed a thorough audit of their arts provision and offers a broad range of arts opportunities for their students in teaching time, out-of-school hours and through partnerships with artists and arts organisations. A large-scale evaluation of the scheme, The impact of Artsmark on schools in England, found that many schools also attributed the following benefits to applying for an award: an increase in pride and self-esteem amongst pupils an improved profile in their local community an increase in professional development opportunities for teachers.

The Swindon and Thamesdown Rotary Club has pledged ongoing financial support to help young people take part in a new national award scheme for the arts. The Arts Award is a national qualification which encourages people aged between 11 and 25 to develop their learning and leadership skills through participation in arts activities. Like the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Arts Award can be taken at bronze, silver and gold level. The qualification will be recognised by colleges, universities and employers throughout the UK.
Artsmad is working in partnership with Swindon Youth Service, secondary schools and arts organisations to encourage young Swindon residents to participate. The Swindon and Thamesdown Rotary Club is setting up a bursary fund to cover the costs of packs and moderation for individuals who can’t afford to take part.
Kirsty Carter, Director of Artsmad says, "We are thrilled to be working in partnership with the Rotary Club. This fund will make a real difference to young people who might not otherwise be able take part in this excellent new scheme. We look forward to tracking the progress of participants. This Award will be relevant to young filmmakers, musicians, artists, dancers, actors – in fact anyone who enjoys expressing themselves creatively."
Bob Barrett of the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown said, "We are always working in the background to support local community activities and are delighted to be supporting a scheme for young people such as this."
The first certificates will be presented in Swindon next summer at a dazzling awards ceremony.
