Smokefree Swindon

From 1 July 2007, virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will be healthier places to visit or work.

That’s the day when England becomes smokefree.  From then on, smoking in these places will be a thing of the past – and against the law.

A smokefree England will protect everyone from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke in enclosed public places and workplaces.

Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses and triggers asthma attacks.

The good news is that it’s estimated that smokefree places will save thousands of lives over the next decade.  Smokefree will help the 7 out of 10 smokers who want to give up smoking, to quit.

Offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, public transport and work vehicles that are used by more than one person are some of the places included in the legislation.

The law will also mean that smoking rooms are no longer allowed.  So anyone wishing to smoke will have to go outside instead.

For details of how the new smokefree legislation will affect your business and for local business support, please see Smokefree Business Support.

Once the details of the law have been finalised, information and resources will be sent to businesses by post or e-mail to help them become smokefree.

You can register now to receive this information when it is ready by visiting smokefreeengland.co.uk/stayinformed or calling the Smokefree England Information Line on 0800 169 169 7.

What Smokefree Swindon Really Means

Smokefree Swindon is a tobacco control campaign aimed at controlling tobacco smoke because it is a harmful substance. Adult smokers who choose to smoke may continue to do so - that is their right - but in a Smokefree Swindon they may not affect other people who have chosen not to do so, specifically in the workplace and enclosed public spaces. The campaign will also support initiatives to inform the public about the risks of second hand smoke in people's own homes, and encourage people to use the local NHS Stop Smoking Service.
