Health & Social Care

Parents, Carers and Providers

Going to work is a milestone in anyone’s life.  When that person has a learning disability, it can cause a lot of concerns for the people who care for them.

A Unique Service

Connect is a Supported Employment Service and is part of Swindon Borough Council Social Services.
Our aim is to increase the employment opportunities for people with learning and associated disabilities in Swindon. We believe that everyone has the right to equal opportunities, particularly in employment. A job can bring respect as well as material, social and personal benefits.

Connect Supported Employment has successfully placed many people with disabilities into real jobs with local companies in Swindon over the last 12 years. This has been achieved by using the effective method of Supported Employment. Connect is unique in delivering an individually focused service offering commitment to both clients and employers.

Connect's Training and Employment Scheme is available to people who are disadvantaged in getting a job because of any of the following disabilities:

  • Learning Difficulty
  • Head Injury
  • Hearing Impairment

Prospective clients must be aged between 18 and 60, unemployed, available for training and wanting to work.

Each person will be introduced to a Job Coach who will support him or her on a one to one basis throughout their time training with Connect. Each individual will receive a tailored package of the following related skills in order to take them further along the pathway to employment:

  • Vocational/Personal Profiling
  • Job Advice, Guidance and Counseling
  • Work Induction Package
  • Individual Action Planning
  • Work Experience/Job Trials
  • Help with Basic Skills
  • Other Vocational Key Skills
  • Job Search Assistance

The Job Coach will also liase with parents, key workers and other interested parties as required. The duration of support provided can vary according to the needs of the individual.

As the individual becomes confident and competent at the work place, the Job Coach gradually fades until the person is able to work independently. The Job Coach remains available to the person and employer for regular appraisals.

With the unique approach, Connect achieves a high level of success in placing people with learning and associated disabilities difficulties into open employment.
