Employer Travel Plans

How resourceful is your business?

The way in which your organisation moves its people and resources can have a big impact upon the success of your company - not simply just in terms of efficiency and cost savings, but also as a mechanism for gaining competitive advantage by demonstrating your green credentials.

Customers and staff are a company's biggest asset and more and more of Swindon's businesses are realising the benefits of implementing a Travel Plan (perhaps as part of official environmental accreditation) that enables people to make 'Smarter Choices' when commuting and conducting business.

What is a Sustainable Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a package of practical measures to encourage people to choose alternatives to single-occupancy car-use. An effective Travel Plan is one that evolves over time to accomodate change and takes advantage of opportunity.

Is a Travel Plan anti-car?

No. Travel Plans can help make more efficient use of the car. This helps essential car users by reducing congestion and freeing up parking for those that really need it. Reseach suggests that many car drivers would prefer to use alternatives if they were made more attractive to them - A Sustainable Travel Plan is the tool to implement changes to make alternative modes of travel more attractive.

Great Western Hospital operate a dedicated bus service from central Swindon to the Hosptial as part of their Travel Plan.

A Travel Plan should be tailored to a particular site and include a range of measures to reduce congestion and pollution by making alternatives to single occupancy car use more feasible and more attractive - whether for environmental, health or financial reasons.

Car sharing is a realistic alternative to driving alone. Staff can save money whilst helping to reduce congestion and pollution.

Measures at a work place might include;

  • the setting up of a car sharing scheme
  • the provision of cycle facilities
  • the provision of showers, lockers and changing facilities to provide for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • negotiating improved bus services
  • offering attractive flexible-working practices
  • discounted season tickets,
  • restricted and/or charged car parking
  • video conferencing and remote working to cut business travel.

Swindon Borough Council can help you to prepare and develop a Travel Plan for your company. Contact the Council's Transport Planning Team for further information.
