What We Do
The Road Safety Team is required to produce measures to promote road safety in order to achieve national road casualty accident reduction targets, which have been adopted by the Council.
The Government’s road safety strategy has set the following targets to be achieved by 2010 based on the 1994-98 averages:
- 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents
- 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured
- 10% reduction in the 'slight' casualty rate, expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres
Further details can be found on the Department for Transport website (www.dft.gov.uk).
In 2007 there were fatal, serious and slight casualties as a result of traffic accidents on the borough's roads (including the M4 and A419).
The average cost to the community per casualty was:
- Fatal: £1698,270
- Serious: £194,490
- Slight: £19,640
In 2007 the total cost to the community for all road casualties was around £20 million
