Street Lighting is an important way of increasing road safety at night. It also improves the quality of life for residents by deterring crime and making people more secure. All the street lights, illuminated signs and bollards are maintained through programmed and reactive works.
Approximately 25,000 street lights and 2,500 illuminated signs and bollards are maintained within the borough, currently by Swindon Services, administered by a highway maintenance team at Premier House, Swindon. In addition to expenditure on routine maintenance and energy, limited resources are available for the replacement of failing concrete and corroded steel columns and provision of additional units where there is an identified need.

Responding to Your Requests
We aim to have individual faults repaired within five working days, areas of lights out repaired within two days and emergency situations made safe within two hours. Street lighting equipment is scouted at night every two weeks during the year to detect lights out or not operating correctly. With annual cleaning, visual inspection for safety, electrical testing, and three-yearly lamp replacement on most units, the council aims to provide a service which is cost-effective and serves the community.
