Pinehurst 20mph - Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we have to have traffic calming?

Traffic calming measures provide the most cost effective way of reducing traffic speeds and of reducing casualties on the road.

Why don’t the police do something about it?

The police do enforce the speed limit but they cannot be there all the time.

Why can’t we have safety cameras?

Think! Swindon Road Safety logoSafety cameras are operated by the Police and can only be used on roads where their high cost can be justified at accident hot spots. With accidents happening at various places, cameras are not the answer.

Why can’t we have planting associated with the traffic calming features?

Whilst there are maintenance problems associated with “isolated” planting this will be given consideration during the design stage.

What about the fire engines and ambulances being delayed?

The Ambulance and Fire Services will be consulted.

Why are you asking me?

If a scheme is implemented we would wish to take account of your views and the benefit of your local knowledge within the design.

What about my bad back and won't it damage my car/exhaust/suspension?

Road humps and speed cushions are still the most effective means of controlling speed and reducing injuries. When constructed correctly and driven over at low speed, they should not cause discomfort to vehicle occupants or damage the vehicle. Their maximum height is 75mm (3 inches) and most cars have a ground clearance of well over this amount.

What about the noise? I work nights/sleep at the front of the house.

Unfortunately, noise problems can arise when drivers drive too fast over raised traffic calming measures.

Why do we need so many features?

To encourage drivers not to exceed 20mph between features, the features should be no greater than 60 metres apart.
