Transport & Streets

What Will the Benefits Be?

Better enforcement of parking regulations and targeting of wrongly and inconsiderately parked vehicles benefits residents and visitors alike, by:

  • Parking signPreventing drivers parking on pavements and obstructing parents with buggies, wheelchair users and pedestrians
  • Improving road safety at junctions where parked vehicles block the view of other drivers
  • Improving safety outside schools
  • Getting traffic flowing freely
  • Improving access and response times for emergency vehicles
  • Improving the circulation for buses and cyclists, etc
  • Cutting abuse of disabled parking spaces and freeing it up for genuinely disabled car users
  • Reviewing traffic regulation orders: the on-street controls to remove restrictions which are no longer needed

Previously, the Government received the money from parking fines issued by the police. Under the new scheme, the Council collects the fines and uses them to pay for the costs of enforcement - using any surplus to improve transport and parking in the borough.
