Transport & Streets

Cycling

Cycling is an energy-efficient, pollution free, convenient, economic, healthy and quick mode of transport over short distances.

Swindon's New Local Transport Plan - We'd like your thoughts!

Swindon Borough Council is currently developing its new Local Transport Plan, shaping the future of Swindon's highways and public transport for the coming years. It's important that we take your views into account, and understand what you see as the priority areas we need to be addressing in our new plan.

The survey is open until the end of March.  Please take a few minutes to answer these questions. It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

New commuter cycle park in Swindon town centre

Want to park your bike safely, securely and conveniently in Swindon town centre? From April 2010 you'll be able to head to our new Brunel cycle park (near Wharf Green), where you can leave your bicycle safely and conveniently.  There will be 24-hour access via smartcard, and cycle racks for up to 100 bikes.

There’s no daily charge to use the cycle park, but you will need to pay a modest one-off charge for an access card to use the cycle parking facilities. We'll have the application form and further information about the cycle park on this webpage nearer the time of opening.

Cycling Maps of Swindon

Swindon Bike map cover

To help encourage people to cycle more, Swindon Borough Council has published a cycling map.

The printed version is available for free from various locations, including the Tourist Information Centre, libraries and council offices.  E-mail us at transportplanning@swindon.gov.uk with your address if you would like to be sent a copy.

Swindon Cycle Route Network ONLINE!

We have now put the map online in an interactive format.  View the new map online.
This format is being tested and can be improved in future, so we are interested in what you think.  If you have any comments about the map (either the paper copy or the online version), please e-mail them to transportplanning@swindon.gov.uk.

Cycle Orienteering

You can use the 2009 Swindon cycle map to take part in orienteering.  It's a great way to explore Swindon in a group, on your own or with the family.  On the map you will see 26 red numbered circles.  These represent orienteering markers attached to street furniture such as lamp posts, railings or signposts.  Download instructions and an entry form and give it a go!

Cycling Champions project

Swindon CTC's Cycling Champions Development Officer Tamina Oliver is on a mission to get Swindon cycling; throughout the four years of project funding Tamina will be enticing as many people onto bikes as she can manage!  Read more about the project on the CTC website.

Cycle Training

For children in Swindon schools, we offer cycle awareness training.  See our road safety pages for further details. There are also Bikeability trainers in the Swindon area.  See the Bikeability website for more details.

For adults needing more confidence on the roads, or to learn to ride a bike from scratch, Challenge Swindon run a 6 week "Up n Cycling" course at the County Ground in Swindon.  See the Challenge Swindon website for more details.

Reporting Problems with Cycle Routes

If you do notice any locations where the cycle route or signs have been damaged, or where the route has been blocked or vandalised, please see Roads, Highways and Pavements Maintenance.

Take a Stand

Do you know of a charity or organisation that could benefit from 2 FREE cycle stands at their premises?

Voluntary sector groups, schools, small businesses, churches and surgeries (in fact almost any type of organisation!) can get free cycle parking stands under the Take a Stand scheme run by Life Cycle UK in partnership with Swindon Borough Council.

Good cycle parking tells the world that you're an environmentally-friendly organisation and it's a proven way of deterring cycle theft.

Two stands - that's parking for four bikes - are available per applicant. You must install the stands on your own property (you can't dig up the pavement!) in a location agreed with Life Cycle UK.  Applicants must be located within Swindon Borough.

For more information and to download an application form, visit the Lifecycle UK website.

Bike Week 2009

Bike Week 2009 ran from 13th June 2009 to 21st June 2009.  Bike Week logoWe had a full programme of varied activities, rides and events.

Aswell as visiting schools with a cycle roadshow, a family cycling festival in Lydiard park also got the whole family pedalling together on a range of bikes.  We also ran a series of "Cycle Buddy" sessions to show people how to get into town on quiet and safe routes.  We plan to continue running the buddy rides, especially to workplaces, and if you'd like to suggest a route (eg: Taw Hill to Windmil Hill) then drop us an e-mail (transportplanning@swindon.gov.uk).

Photo from the cycle breakfast

We also held "Wheely Wicked Wednesday" on 17th June, where Doctor bike came and gave free cycle healthchecks whilst the owners tucked into free breakfasts at the Octagon restaurant.  With charity rides, health rides and a women only ride, there really was something for everyone in Bike Week!

Cycling Safely

Please take care when cycling - Follow the rules of the road (the Highway Code and the Country Code) and wear appropriate safety clothing and a helmet. Use your lights and bell when necessary. Don't forget to have fun!
