The Swindon Collection at the Central Library features a large number of books and other items by and about local authors, the most important of which are Richard Jefferies and Alfred Williams.

Richard Jefferies (1848-1887)

A novelist and naturalist, born at Coate Farmhouse near Swindon, Richard Jefferies worked as a journalist to supplement his income. Despite ill health he wrote many works including 'Bevis', 'Wood Magic' and 'The Story of My Heart'.

There are copies of different editions of all of Jefferies' titles, together with journal articles by him and critical books and essays about him. There is a Richard Jefferies Society and details of the group can be obtained from the Central Library.

Alfred Williams (1877-1930)

'The Hammerman Poet'  was born in South Marston. He was a self-taught man whose titles include 'Life in a Railway Factory', 'A Wiltshire Village' and 'Folksongs of the Upper Thames'.

Copies of all his works are available along with biographical and critical works.

There is a society 'Friends of Alfred Williams' and their details can be obtained from the Central Library.
