Highworth Library runs three lively minded, diverse and approachable groups.
Tuesday Reading Group
The Tuesday group met at Highworth library on 26 August 2008. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 7 July 2008 at 1.30pm when we will dicuss the book by Margaret Murphy Weaving Shadows.
We now have a waiting list in place for this Reading Group, if anyone would like to add their name to the list please telephone Highworth Library on 01793 462500.
Wednesday Reading Group
Our group meets every month on a Wednesday and welcomes enquiries from people who might like to join us. Either leave your details with a member of the Library staff or just come along to the next meeting.
The group met on Wednesday 13 August 2008 to discuss the books of James Patterson and compare his writing skills across various types of novels. We all read Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and chose any other book by James Patterson. Most of the group were unaware that he had written other types of novels including science fiction and love stories. Apart form one member, who found it too 'candyflossy', all present were surprised and moved at his skill at writing "as a woman" but thought he showed his thriller writing skills in a twist at the end of the book.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 10 September 2008 at 10:30am when the group will discuss The Rose Of Sebastopol by Katharine McMahon.
Thursday Reading Group
Highworth Library holds a Thursday evening reading group that meets every 4 weeks on a Thursday evening at 6.30pm.
The next meeting will be on the 17 January 2008 when we will be discussing In The Country of Men by Hisham Matar, followed by the 28 February 2008 when the book being discussed will be Stuart by Alexander Masters.
We are a friendly group and new members are always welcome, just pop in to the library and pick up the book, then join us for coffee. It is amazing how much extra you get out of a book by sharing it with others.
"Bonkers for Books" Children's Reading Group
Meeting 7 Otober 2008 -
Six children attened today and that includes one new member.
We shared our holiday experiences and talked about the work we had done around Sebastian Darke's Prince of Fools. This is the second book we received from the Bodley Head Book Club of the Year. During the summer break, our third book arrived - The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney - and we will be reading this next and deciding what artwork we will produce.
Our younger members decided that The Spook's Apprentice was probably too spooky for them and are reading Enid Blyton.
The next meeting will be in four week's time on Tuesday 4 November 2008 at 4pm. This is because the 28 October 2008 coincides with half term.
If you would like more information about the groups, please telephone Highworth Library on 01793 463500, or contact us by email at highworth.library@swindon.gov.uk
Liden Library Readers' Group
We have read in recent months The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, which was enjoyed by all. It had overtones of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca in the first chapter. After that, we read Perdita: the life of Mary Robinson by Paula Byrne. Most of us enjoyed this book but found it fairly hard to read as it deviated from her life and bought in many people of the times. Probably a very good read for anyone interested in the history of the theatre. The book we will discuss at our next meeting on the 10 June will be Speaking of Love by Angela Young. Our next book is Atonement by Ian McEwan. We had a nice social evening watching the film. We hope to contrast and compare the film with the book.
Our group is very full so unfortunately we cannot take any new members at present.
The Group generally meet every six weeks, on a Tuesday evening between 6 - 7 pm.
If you would like more information about the group, please telephone Liden Library on 01793 463504, or contact us by email at liden.library@swindon.gov.uk

Park Library Readers Group
Park Library re-opens after it's 11-month refurbishment at 10am on 8 September 2008 and members of the readers group will be present as part of the formal opening ceremony. The group very much appreciated being able to meet at Walcot Library during the closure period and is looking forward to the new surroundings at Park.
The next book up for discussion is The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. To quote from www.fantasticfiction.co.uk, "Her name is Dinah. In the Bible her fate is merely hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the verses of the Book of Genesis that deal with Jacob and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, 'The Red Tent' reveals the traditions of ancient womanhood and family honour." Further information is available through www.anitadiamant.com.
If you would like to come along you will be made very welcome and there will be spare copies of the book at Park Library from 8 September 2008. The group next meets on Monday 6 October 2008. We will be starting at 10am and generally we meet for about an hour.
