Organised Walking Groups

New research shows that walking is the ideal way to increase the level of physical activity needed to maintain health and fitness for people of all ages.

The current recommendations for physical activity is:

  • 30 minutes of brisk walking five times a week is all it takes to feel a difference.
  • 'Brisk' walking means walking so that you breathe a little faster, feel warmer and have a slightly faster heart rate.
  • It doesn't need to be difficult and you should still be able to hold a conversation.

Walking is the perfect activity for health; it can

  • Make you feel good.
  • Give you more energy.
  • Help you sleep better.
  • Help reduce stress level.
  • Keep your heart strong.
  • Reduce blood pressure.
  • Help to manage your weight.

So, why walk:

  • It's a sure safe way to health and fitness.
  • It's a chance to meet people and make friends
  • Almost everyone can do it
  • You can do it anywhere and any time
  • There's very little risk of injury.
  • It doesn't hurt
  • You can do it at your own pace
  • You can start slowly and build up gently

Croft Leisure Centre logoThe instructor led walking sessions at Croft Sports Centre run on a Tuesday afternoon from March to November. Following routes around Broome Manor and Old Town.

Link Centre logoThese instructor led walking sessions at the Link Centre run on a Wednesday afternoon between April and September. Taking in many routes around West Swindon.


county ground logo This is a walking session for ladies only. This session runs on Fridays from 11.45am to 12.45pm. The session is lead by a qualified instructor. Meet at the County Ground Lifestyle Centre's reception.

  • All walks will start and finish at each Leisure Centre.
  • Led by a qualified instructor.
  • Most walks on tarmac paths.
  • Remember: to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, such as trainers, walking boots or stout shoes, waterproofs and a cold drink.
