Corporate Tag Rugby League Review 2006-07

Spring 2007 Tag Rugby Tournament

The launch of Tag rugby in 2006 saw six teams enter the league.

Now supported by the RFU, 2007 started with a spring tournament hosted by Swindon Supermarine rugby club, who have also kindly let us use, the facilities for the league starting in June.

The tournament consisted of two pools with the top two teams progressing to semi-finals and then the final.

The night kicked off with 2006 league champions taking on a much-improved PCT team - Nationwide running out winners after a tight game.

On Pitch 2 the Police were winning the battle against SCOB.

Next we saw the debut for Add a Logo into tag rugby against PCT - the latter coming through victorious.

On Pitch 2 Arval (second place in 2007) had their first game of 2007 against SCOB, who needed the win to have any chance of making the semi-finals; a tight game saw SCOB come through the tough test.

Another debut on Pitch 1 as AFL Europe had the daunting task of taking on Nationwide. After a blistering start by Nationwide we feared the worst for AFL, but to their credit they battled on and got their rewards with some fancy footwork and great support to see them across the line. The late rally was not enough however, and Nationwide marched into the semi-finals.

More games followed with the results leaving us with Nationwide vs SCOB and Police vs PCT.

After a slow start, SCOB surprised everyone and maybe even themselves with a victory over Nationwide.

That left the other semi-final, which after full time was tied, which meant 2 minutes extra where Police had a little too much for PCT and progressed to the final.

A great final, two very good teams on a difficult playing surface due to the rain made for an interesting encounter.

The momentum SCOB had built up and possibly the extra-time Police had to play gave us the winners – SCOB are the Spring 2007 tag rugby winners.

Special thanks to our referees who, having only completed their training provided by Active Swindon in early April, took part in their first tournament.
