About the Museum
Swindon Museum has displays of local history, archaeology and geology. The displays tell the story of Swindon's Jurassic past, its connections with the Roman Empire and the more recent social history of this thriving town. A visitor from Washington DC enthused, "I love your museum. It is centred around children and there is so much for them to do and so many things they can touch."
Unusual Exhibits
The unusual exhibits include:
- Items from the Roman villa site at Groundwell Ridge in North Swindon, including remains of wall plaster, tiles and a silver bowl.
- A rare Roman wine strainer discovered in the Wanborough area.
- Unique Roman lead casket and glass urn.
- A 4.5m (15ft) Indian crocodile.
- An Egyptian mummy of a 12-year-old boy.
There is also a programme of temporary exhibitions taken from the museum collections, the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art and the Swindon Collection of British Studio Ceramics.
