On this page: Advice and guidance for people wishing to apply for council housing and join the waiting list.
Who Can Apply
The allocation of council-owned homes is strictly managed to ensure accommodation is available to those most in need. You must register to join the housing waiting list.
The housing register is open to any person aged 16 years or over.
Some people from outside the UK are eligible to apply, including the following:
- People with exceptional leave to enter or remain in the UK granted prior to 1 April 2003
- People granted humanitarian protection or discretionary leave
- British citizens living in the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland
Taking an Active Role
Swindon Borough Council no longer approaches home seekers with a direct offer of accommodation (except in special circumstances or where an expression of interest has been successful).
Instead, you will be encouraged to take an active role in applying for a property of your choice, in an area of your choice.
How to Register and Apply
A 24-page guide to applying is available as a downloadable PDF file:
You will first need to register with us. You will then be able to apply for accommodation.
