Housing Adaptations for Those with Disabilities

If you or someone living in your home has a disability, you may qualify for a disabled facilities grant.

Disabled facilities grants can assist in making your home more suitable to live in, and help disabled occupiers live more independently. To qualify, the disabled occupier must be either registered or eligible to be registered as a disabled person.

In addition, disabled facilities grants are subject to a means test which assesses how much, if anything, the applicant must contribute towards the cost of the works.

Before a grant can be considered, the needs of the disabled occupier will be assessed by an occupational therapist. Only those adaptations considered appropriate and necessary will be eligible for grant assistance.

If you or another disabled occupier are experiencing difficulty living independently in your house, you should initially contact Swindon Borough Council's Social Services Department to arrange for an assessment:

A Preliminary Grant Enquiry Form can then be completed, and one of our Officers will contact you.
