The Swindon Homelesness Strategy 2008-2013 aims to continue to prevent homelessness whenever possible and to support and sustain in accommodation the diverse range of people who require the services of the council and its partners.
Swindon has one of the highest numbers of households in temporary accommodation outside London. In December 2007, there were 646 households in temporary homeless accommodation, and the Government has set a target to reduce this to 435 by 2010. This will be a challenge for Swindon and its partners.
This strategy builds on the good work and commitment already in evidence and it has been produced through joint working with the partner agencies and consultation with service users and providers.
The Council’s first Homelessness Strategy was published in July 2003 and was based on the findings of a comprehensive review of the homelessness services.
Over the past five years there have been significant improvements in the provision of homelessness services from the Council and partner agencies, and this has enabled many families and individuals to receive appropriate support and advice to prevent them becoming homeless.
