Housing

Swindon Empty Homes Partnership

Fact Sheets on Options

Empty properties are a wasted resource. At the same time, empty properties can attract a range of problems including crime and anti-social behaviour.

Swindon Borough Council launched an Empty Homes Strategy in 1997 in order to promote the return to use of empty homes in the private sector. In 2003, the Strategy was reviewed and re-named the Private Sector Empty Properties Strategy. This reflects a focus on both empty homes and empty commercial premises.

The Strategy is implemented by Swindon Empty Homes Partnership (comprising the Council and partner Housing Associations). The three partner Housing Associations are:

-Jephson Housing Association

-James Butcher Housing Association

-SOHA Housing Ltd

It is recognised that properties can remain empty for a variety of reasons. Similarly, owners circumstances/requirements will vary. Given these factors, the Strategy offers owners a broad range of options. This series of fact sheets provide brief information on the four options currently on offer:

Fact Sheet One – Free Advice

Fact Sheet Two – The Private Lettings Scheme

Fact Sheet Three – The Grants for Letting Scheme

Fact Sheet Four – Purchase by Housing Association
