Free 60 and Over Swimming graphic

Free 60 and over logoIntroduction to the Free Swimming Programme
From April 1st 2009 everybody 60 and over will be entitled to swim for free at published public swimming sessions at Swindon Borough Councils’ leisure centres. The scheme is part of a national campaign to promote swimming, general fitness, more active lifestyles and well-being. It is a cornerstone of the Government's Legacy Action Plan, which aims to make the most of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Senior lady and gentlemanWho can access free swimming?
Anybody aged 60 and over can enjoy free swimming at Dorcan Recreation Complex, Health Hydro, Link Centre, Oasis Leisure Centre, and through our partnerships with Highworth Recreation Centre and Ridgeway Leisure Centre (Wroughton) during the published public swimming sessions.

When does the free swimming start?
The Free Swimming Programme will commence on April 1st 2009 and is currently funded for two years, until 31st March 2011. The Government has yet to confirm if the scheme will be supported past this date.

How do I get a free swim?
To take up the free swim offer you must have valid identification as proof of age, this can be in the form of a SwindonCard, (the Borough’s leisure card) bus pass, passport, driving licence or birth certificate.

How will uptake be monitored?
As this is a government funded scheme Swindon Borough Council will need to monitor and report statistical information about usage, therefore we urge over 60’s to purchase a SwindonCard so that this information can be collated through the booking system, as we will need to report on the number and gender of participants.

Please note: Ridgeway Leisure Centre has their own booking system.

What if I don’t have a SwindonCard?
SwindonCards are available from all SBC leisure sites, the price for a Swindon Borough residents is just £5.00, a Non-resident the cost is £10.00.
Having a SwindonCard will also allow opportunity to use all our leisure facilities at discounted prices. There are three levels of discount depending on your circumstances, with extra savings on some activities at off peak times.
