Building Control

On this page: General information about Building Control regulations and services provided by Swindon Borough Council.

The Swindon Borough Council Building Control Service ensures that buildings are constructed and altered so that:

  • They comply with the Building Regulations
  • Dangerous structures are made safe
  • Demolitions are carried out in as safe a manner as possible.

The purpose of Building Control regulation is to protect the health and safety of people in or around buildings. They also cover the conservation of energy and with aspects relating to access and facilities for disabled people.

Building Control surveyors manage the Building Regulations. Our highly-qualified and experienced teams of surveyors examine and comment on plans for developments and inspect work that is in progress. Their wide knowledge of materials and building methods is available to you at all stages of the building process.

New Building Control Charges

New fees apply following the introduction of the Building (Local Authority Charges) Regulations 2010 and a change to the VAT rate. The new regulations aim to allow a number of factors to be taken into account and the option to determine individual charges which can make the process fairer.

The new fees are shown on the appropriate application form and research copy charges document - please see Building Control Services. Please contact us if you have any queries about the charges.

Health and Safety Executive

If you're having construction or refurbishment work done, you may need to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and you may have other duties as well. Please see the HSE website (www.hse.gov.uk) for details.
