Completed Schemes

Some of the major construction schemes recently completed include:

Purton Road Canal Culvert

CanalThe canal culvert was constructed in advance of the Northern Orbital Road in order to facilitate the future redevelopment of the Wilts and Berks Canal. The works were project managed by the Structural Engineering Team.

Oxford Road Reconstruction And Cycleway

In 2001 the council designed and supervised  the reconstruction of Oxford Road between White Hart Roundabout and Greenbridge Roundabout. The works also included the construction of a new cycleway/footway, the provision of three new pelican crossings, the signalisation of Nythe Road junction and new street lighting.

Rodbourne Road Environmental Enhancement Scheme

The aim of this scheme was to improve the existing environment for shoppers and traders and to encourage vistors to the nearby Great Western Outlet Village to explore the Rodbourne shopping area. The scheme was designed by the group after extensive consultation with the traders and residents and included upgraded the paving, street furniture and lighting.

Wroughton Park & Ride

This £2m scheme was designed in 2000 and constructed In 2001. The works included a 672-space car park together with an amenity building for staff and passengers situated within an attractive landscaped area. The car park is monitored by 24-hour surveillance CCTV and has recently won a secure car park award.

Northern Orbital Road - Street Lighting Design Checking

As well as carrying out the design of new schemes, the group also check construction proposals. The group were responsible  for checking the design of the street lighting for the new Northern Orbital Road - a major new road linking Cricklade Road in the north to Purton Road to the west of Swindon.

Future Schemes 2002/03 Programme (Draft)

Using funding obtained from the council’s Local Transport Plan we propose to undertake the following works this year:

Public Transport Initiative:

  • Cycle/pedestrian initiative, Lydiard Fields; cycle track, Shire Court; cycle track, Dorcan Way, Covingham Roundabout to Faraday Road, Dorcan Way; Greenbridge Roundabout to West View; Marlowe Avenue to St Paul's Drive; Pond Street to Whitworth Road; Covingham Roundabout to Coleview; Groundwell West to Cricklade Road; railway station to bus station link.
  • Design of theCommonhead Park & Ride site
  • Safe Routes to School intitiative. Various schemes including:
    • Haig Close - uncontrolled pedestrian crossing improvements
    • Langstone Way – improved crossing points adjacent to school
  • Highway Maintenance initiative. Various schemes including:
    • A361 Highworth/Lechlade at three sites
    • A3102 Great Western Way – Blagrove Roundabout to Mannington Roundabout resurfacing
    • A4361 Wroughton – M4 overbridge to Three Tuns Roundabout resurfacing
    • Various non-principle roads overlay and resurfacing  
    • Various surface dressing and haunching schemes

Local Safety Initiative

  • Various schemes including:
    • Penhill: 20mph zone
    • Park North: 20 mph zone
    • Park South: 20 mph zone

Highway Structures Initaitive

  • Vickers Bridge decommissioning
  • Somerville Road subway decommissioning
