Household Waste Recycling Centre

Description of Service

A Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is available to residents of Swindon to dispose of household recycling and household waste. The HWRC is based at:

Service Levels

The HWRC accepts the following items:

  • Glass
  • Cans
  • Paper
  • Textiles
  • Cardboard
  • Electrical household products (including fridges and freezers)
  • Personal computers
  • Scrap metal
  • Car batteries
  • DIY/hardcore
  • Wood
  • Garden waste
  • Plastic bottles
  • Portable batteries
  • Bulky hard plastics
  • General household waste

Hazardous waste (excluding asbestos) must be handed to a member of staff to ensure correct disposal.

Car Tyres and Asbestos

The HWRC does not accept business and commercial waste. Certain wastes are considered industrial but are produced by households. For these wastes, a charge is made. These charges are:

Compost and Woodchip

The HWRC sells locally-made compost and woodchip at the site. The prices for these are:

Opening Times

The HWRC is open daily from 8.00am-9.30pm year round with the exception of:

  • Christmas Eve (when the centre closes at 5.30pm).
  • Christmas Day (closed all day).
  • Boxing Day (closed all day).
  • New Year’s Day (closed all day).

We aim to keep queuing time at the HWRC to a maximum of 30 minutes.

Request a Service or Report a Problem

You can do this in a number of ways:

  • Use the HWRC text service to assess the actual queuing times at the HWRC. Simply text ‘sbc recycle’ to 88833 (standard rates apply). A text reply will be sent back to you detailing the likely current queuing time.

  • You can also use the HRWC webcam to assess queuing times for yourself. Please see the webcam page.
