Fleet Street forms the northern boundary to Swindon's pedestrianised shopping area. Once a heavily-trafficked peripheral shopping zone that typically hosted second hand shops, the pedestrian scheme, designed in collaboration with the borough's engineers, sought to rejuvenate the area - uniting it with the main shopping complex. A contemporary design theme was selected to match the overall modern feel to the centre's architecture and the style of several redeveloped shops fronting the street.
A local firm, Factory Furniture (www.factoryfurniture.co.uk) designed and produced a purpose-made cycle shelter, seating, tree guards and surrounds using stainless steel and timber. Like many town centres, the area is riddled with underground services and the latest techniques of managing the spread of tree roots enabled new trees to be planted. Root barriers, undergound guying, irrigation pipes and a special topsoil that has the strength to support the paving above, have all been used.
