Responsibility
for the enforcement of health and safety legislation is split between the Health and Safety Executive
and the team - depending on the nature of the business. Typically, sectors such as retailing, catering,
offices and warehousing are dealt with by local authority officers.
Local
businesses are subject to periodic inspection, according to the assessed health and safety risk.
Businesses
should notify the council or the HSE prior to opening or if there is a significant change in their activities.
