Communicable Diseases

In addition to the food safety and hygiene activities the Food Health and Safety Team carry out such as sampling, training and inspections we are also involved with:

Investigation of Notified Diseases Such as Food Poisonings

To try to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases we provide advice and guidance to businesses and individuals. Where necessary, we enforce the legal requirements which relate to affected persons such as food handlers. For more information about specific types of food poisoning see the Communicable Diseases FAQ.

Swimming Pool and Spa Water Quality

The quality of swimming and spa pools is monitored to check that acceptable standards are being maintained and that control systems are effective.

Cooling Towers

Cooling towers and similar plant which use water need to be registered with the council. Please Contact Us for more information. Such systems need careful management to prevent the growth of legionnella bacteria which can cause legionnaires disease if they are dispersed in the air and then inhaled. We carry out regular checks of registered premises to ensure that the necessary controls and monitoring are in place.

For more information about legionnella and legionnaires disease see the Communicable Disease FAQ.
