Sustainable Development - Our Strategy

The protection, conservation and improvement of our environment is vital to maintaining and improving quality of life for all who live and work in the borough and beyond. Our Local Agenda 21 Strategy was adopted by Swindon Borough Council in November 2000. This document sets out exactly how to plan to improve quality of life in the borough of Swindon.

To obtain a copy of the strategy, please Contact the Sustainable Development Team or download the pdf file:

Local Agenda 21 Strategy - (321Kb PDF File)

As an employer and provider of services, Swindon Borough Council must act as an exemplar and make sure our policies, procedures and working practices do not harm the environment and indeed seek to improve the environment and quality of life for everyone living and working in the borough of Swindon.

There are three core areas for the plan: waste, energy and travel. Each of these has its own action plan which is promoted under the Green Housekeeping banner. Implementation and monitoring is being led by the Sustainable Initiatives Group, which includes officers and staff from all directorates in the borough council.

Corporate Environmental Strategy

Internally, Swindon Borough Council has adopted a Corporate Environmental Strategy, which looks at environmental management systems within the Council.

The Corporate Environmental Strategy seeks to ensure Swindon Borough Council delivers its services and operates its own business in a more environmentally sustainable way.

The Seeds of Change

The 'Seeds of Change' is a summary of Swindon Borough Council's Local Agenda 21 Strategy for Sustainable Development.

Implementation of the Seeds of Change is being led by the Sustainable Development team in partnership with many different groups and organisations.

Since Swindon Borough Council adopted its Local Agenda 21 Strategy in November 2000 significant progress has been made in a number of areas:-

  • Pilot kerbside collection of recyclables for many households across Swindon Borough
  • Installation of over 200 'doggy' bins
  • Environmental Protection 'Out of Hours' service
  • 'Green Housekeeping' plan within Swindon Borough Council
  • New Park & Ride site at Wroughton
  • Seven Neighbourhood Safety Teams (NeSTs)
  • Fridge recycling unit at Barnfield depot
  • Almost 400 'green' fleet vehicles

We have developed a number of indicators; these are a way of telling us how we are doing and the things we can measure to tell us if the environment is improving or deteriorating.
