Community Cohesion

Achieving Community Cohesion in Swindon

People Matter

We want Swindon to be a place where:

  • People are living and working together with quality of life
  • People have appreciation and respect for each others’ needs
  • Individuals’ and Communities’ beliefs, cultures and identities are recognised and valued
  • Strong and positive relationships are being developed between people from different backgrounds in the workplace, in schools and within neighbourhoods

Swindon Today

Swindon is changing.

With a growing and developing population, the Borough of Swindon is in a period of significant social change.

Swindon’s growth brings a range of issues that represent both challenges and opportunities to achieving and sustaining a cohesive community.

Swindon Borough Council is committed to working with its partners and local people to achieve cohesion.

Work is progressing across three strands:

  • A Community Cohesion Strategy – to promote and encourage opportunities for people to learn and appreciate other cultures, beliefs and values.
  • A Community Cohesion Contingency Plan – to enable key agencies and services to respond effectively to activities or incidents that may threaten community cohesion in Swindon.
  • A process for Tension Monitoring – working together to keep in touch with how people and communities are feeling, to assess reported incidents and monitor reports that relate to community relationships
